2007 Pre-Draft Camp: Day 3 Notebook
By Matthew Gardner | May 31, 2007
The outcome of Pre-Draft Camp games isn't supposed to matter much in the grand scheme of things. While demonstrating your ability to function well as part of a unit is important, a win or a loss in a Pre-Draft game isn't going to matter much come Draft night.
But Thursday's first game on Wide World of Sports came down to the final minute with Team One edging Team Four, 88-85.
After scoring just four points in Wednesday's game, Jackson State's Trey Johnson had a much better outing and led Team One with 16 points. However, Johnson has combined to shoot only 7-of-19 through two games this week.
The winning squad also got 14 points from Arizona's Mustafa Shakur, who didn't shoot very well (2-of-7) but hit 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. Shakur also had seven assists, but did commit four turnovers.
Quinton Hosley, who sat out on Wednesday due to a shoulder injury, played on Thursday, scoring 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Team One has had its share of injuries during this camp, in addition to Hosley sitting out on Wednesday, Northern Illinois' James Hughes sat out with an illness and Virginia Tech's Zabian Dowdell left the game early after taking a hard fall.
And though he didn't miss any time, Florida's Chris Richard needed a couple of stitches after the game due to a cut. Richard scored 10 points and grabbed seven boards.
Team Four had five players in double figures led by 13 apiece from Boston College's Jared Dudley and North Carolina's Reyshawn Terry. San Diego State's Brandon Heath added 12 points, while Wake Forest's Kyle Visser and UMass' Rashaun Freeman each contributed with 11.
While impressing scouts with his performance on Wednesday, Heath struggled with consistency during Thursday's game. One moment he misses a fastbreak layup and the next he's saving a pass from going out of bounds by flipping it through his legs to Terry.
Though he's shooting the ball well (12-of-19 through two games), some may be questioning his decision-making abilities. Late in Thursday's game with Team Four trailing by four, Heath missed an opportunity to pass to an open teammate and inside tried unsuccessfully to draw a foul on an ill-advised three-pointer.
Dudley continues to show one of the most complete games from the small forwards playing this week. The 6-7 player has demonstrated his polished abilities under the rim, while also showing he can knock down the open jumper.
Dudley averaged 19.0 ppg last season for Wake Forest, while shooting 56 percent from the field.
NOTE: Please check back later this evening for recaps of Thursday's Game Two and Three.
